Undrallu For Ganesh Chaturthi

“Vakratunda Mahakaya Surya Koti Samaprabha. Nirvignam Kurumedeva Sarvakaryeshu Sarvada”

Hope you all had a wonderful time celebrating Vinayaka Chavithi!! Before we jump to the recipe, I would like to share my experience during the festival.

Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganapathi Mandir – After Evening Arthi

We got up early in the morning on this day (pretty early I should say than normal), sanctified ourselves and the house especially near the puja area where we were planning to install the Ganesha idol. I was busy working on the puja mandapam by decorating with flowers, fruits, books and lights and also the prasadam and Hubby dear was busy making our echo friendly Ganesha. Finally we placed Ganesha idol in the Mandapam and also Mangala Gauri idol (which is made of turmeric) on a betel leaf.

Undrallu for Nivedyam

On this day in our house only boys perform this puja, so ‘R’ started chanting the Sanskrit words and I was helping him out here and there. Finally we placed the prasadam in front of the god and took blessings. On the 5th day we did the Ganesh Visarjan as I was travelling and I thought ‘R’ will not be able to handle everything. But usually the festivity lasts for 10 days on Anant Chaturdashi and on the 11th day you will do the Ganesh Visarjan. At the end we had a good time celebrating the festival with devotion.

Today I would like to share another recipe ‘Undrallu/ Kudumulu’ which is offered as nivedyam/prasadam to Lord Ganesh during the Ganesh Chathurthi. They are savory rice balls which are made from rice semolina/ biyyam ravva, which you can make it very easily at home and channa dal (black chickpeas-split). There are many variations to this recipe depends on where you are from. I just twisted the recipe by adding little seasoning /tadka in the mix.

• 1 Cup Rice
• 2 Cups Water
• 1/3 Cup Channa Dal (soak ib water for 20 mins and drain)
• Salt to taste

For Seasoning:
• 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
• 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
• Pinch of Asafoetida/hing
• 1 tbsp Ghee (clarified butter)

To Make the Rice Semolina:
1. Wash the rice and soak the rice in water for 30 min.
2. Drain the water and dry the rice completely.
3. Now in a blender ground to a coarse powder

To Make Undrallu:
1. Heat ghee in a pan and add all the seasoning ingredients, let them splutter for few minutes. Now add the channa dal and fry them for few seconds.
2. Add water and salt and bring it to a boil. Now add the ground rice semolina and stir continuously ensuring that no lumps are formed.
3. Once all the water is absorbed and appears like a big lump, cover and cook for 4-5 minutes. Turn off the heat and let it cool.
4. Once cooked mixture gets cools down, make big or small lemon sized ball.
5. Undrallu are ready to be offered to Lord Ganesha as naivedyam and you can enjoy them after the puja at any time of the day.

1.If you are not interested in using rice semolina you can use it regular Semolina.
2. You can add dry fruits and nuts and some chilli pepper flakes to spice it up.
3. Don’t use the Basmati rice or Jasmine rice for this recipe. I like using Long grain rice or Sona Masoori rice.
